i sent off my P60's for the last 5 years to see whether i was entitled to a tax rebate

on monday i received a letter saying i was entitled to 339 rebate but this was not the final amount as they were still calculating it, then on tuesday i was sent a letter saying i was entitled to a further 1278 for a different year and that they were still calculating my full rebate and would be in touch.

can anyone tel me how long it may take for them to finish calculating and also why they have sent me 2 letters saying how much they owe me but i cant have it yet, surely it would've been more sensible to finish calculating it all and then send the letters along with a cheque

Why did you think that you were entitled to tax refunds from your P60's? And obviously to at least some extent the Tax Office agree with you. Why would your tax have been so wrong at source? Have you found retrospectively that you weren't getting an allowance you should have been receiving?

At a guess, I'd say the letters refer to different tax years, although why they didn't calculate everything for all years together before writing at all I have no idea.
The words "sensible" and "Inland Revenue" cannot be used in the same sentence.

I recently received a demand for 1400 for underpaid tax for 2005/06. I paid it.
A week later I received a letter saying I had overpaid tax for 2006/2007....for 1400, and the cheque was enclosed.

i'd been working freelance and kept getting put on emergency tax and then i took up a position with a comapny they had me on emergency tax and it took me a year of phoning them and the tax office to get it changed.

Also i send my P60's of every couple of years just to see if im due a rebate, it takes 2 mins to send them off and if im not due anything then it all it does is keep someone in the tax office earning their money.

Everytime i have done this i have been entitled to something the minimum amout being 700 so its definately worth doing especially in the light of peoples current financial situations
They done the calcs in about 3 seconds, they are giving you what they know they can give you safely. They will be making further inquiries about the larger amount, for example they will check that someone (your employer??) actually paid the money to them. They are just letting you know that you probably have something comming.
If you have regularly been on emergency tax then yes you would be entitled to tax refunds (though in theory those should come through to you eventually anyway without you needing to actually submit a P60 or anything else).

However, very few people within the PAYE system will actually be on an emergency tax code consistently and those that are are probably well aware of it and what they need to do to get their tax back.
