I am buying some PC CD-ROM, and the listed System Requirements are: Windows 95/98/2000/ME/XP.

Am I right in thinking that Vista can also be included and was there anything else between XP & Vista?

Nothing between Vista and XP.

If you have a Vista machine, software may not be compatible if it doesn't state Vista, similarly Vista software may not work on an XP machine.

I know that there is a good chance that Vista software may not work on an older model. I seem to remember this arose with my daughter when we established that her XP could use older games but the older machines could not play games brought out in the XP era.

look on the game's website - it should say

this should give you an idea ... if it's on it will ... if it isn't ... it still might
