I guess the best description of this hat would be a nerd hat, it has small windmill, helicopter blade on top. But what is it actually called? Where can one be got? given that sterotypically nerds wear them, are they something academic, or just a toy, as in it shows they were dressed by their mum?!

Look forward to some answers.

Is this the sort of hat you mean Loz?

I believe they are known as propeller beanies, and seem to have been adopted by those who regard themselves as "nerds / geeks" as a kind of mark of belonging, or badge of honour. I have no idea as to where the association originated - I would imagine there is probably a film involved somewhere down the line - one of those 1980's american college campus comedies perhaps?

Any explanation of this minor phenomenon would probably involve words such as "ironic statement" or possibly "post-modern expression"
Nice link Oneeyedvic! I especially like the bit "our caps aren't like those goofy joke ones" - oh yes they are!
lol I used to have one of those hats!!! They're just called "propeller hats" I believe. No unique name.
