Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

I have been a moderately heavy drinker for years, but decided to give it up a week ago. I read that you can get serious withdrawal symptoms like depression, anxiety etc. So far, I have been sleeping better than I have for years and the only problem I have is that I don't feel quite "with it" during the day, i.e. a little out of focus. How long does it take for all the alcohol to leave the body's system, and has anyone else had withdrawal symptoms? Thank you.

I need to rethink my alcohol intake...I do enjoy my night time tipple of red....what did you used to drink ...and how much ?
The alcohol will leave the systemn within a few days, what remains is the body's memory of it and I imagin that will take a lot longer to get over.
the good thing is that you're sleeping much better, the sleep you probably had before was a drunken stupor wheras this is a natural sleep and more refreshing, which helps you to feel better, the days will be harder to cope with, try and mix more with non drinkers and be sure to get the right help and support, good luck.
If you were to have any serious withdrawal symptoms they would have kicked in by now. The focus problem will correct itself within a week or two. Stick with it, be strong.
i haven;t got a clue on the answer but WELL DONE!
I'm with choc lover - I don't have any useful advice except stick with it - you've taken a brave step - lots of luck to you !
pelican8000 Well done so far. Dont look for excuses to start drinking again.
Agree with chimney would have had problems by now if were going to. Depends what means by moderately heavy also. As said sleep with alcohol is not normal so without it you should feel better. Depression/anxiety are usually the reasons why people drink - alcohol gets rid of these so when you stop the problems are still there.
The alcohol was out of you system after 2 or 3 days but the effects will take longer. Physical Withdrawal happens most after many years of drinking.
