Shutting down with Windows Vista

Help. When shutting down with Windows Vista you click the Start button bottom left and then the arrow to shut down. Today nothing happens when I click on the start button, how do I get it to switch off

if it really won't shut down any other way hold the power button in for about 4-5 seconds and it will hard power it down.
