My lad had car accident today and skidded at 20 mph on mushed up leaves which had frozen, rolled his car and wrote it off. The pictures are frightening - he is lucky to walk away - let alone without any injuries at all. Middle aged passer by asked if he was ok through the smashed glass and wandered off - never even phoned for help for him!!! Police said it is very rare that they attend an accident like this where the young guy has a valid licence, insurance and is sober.

NO no knowledge - that is is what the police told us after measuring skid marks and get realistic ! That's lovely!!! Why so nasty? He is a good lad and drived abobut 1000 miles a week for his job. Probably just as experienced as both of you!!!

Thanks to nicer people for genuine concern. it's lovely to think that some people can appreciate how lucky I feel.

Not trying to be ignorant here but I seriously doubt it was 20 mph. When I crashed a few years ago I underexaggerated too but that number is just plain silly.
I've never been good at physics, but if you skid does the car not accelerate at some point?

I hope your son went to the hospital and that he is able to make an insurance claim. He was lucky, but he was also driving sensibly, good on him.

let me explain... it wasn't skidding - I have mislead you. He was on a straight piece of road, and the back wheels all of began juddering and he knew something was wrong, he took foot off gas and the back end by this time was sliding, it hit edge of verge and then he rolled it down 10 foot bank into ditch. He didn't roll it as a result of speed - in fact he said it was bizzar ( sorry about spelling) as it all happened so slowly and he managed to get himself into foetus position before it rolled as he knew what was coming - it was just unfortunate that he was near the ditch, hence it rolling slowly backwards, not over and over in the road. He drives about 50,000 miles a year and relys on car for work and hence is a careful driver- he is not a young beginner and certainly no boy racer!!!!
Thanks for all your concern - he is fine and really counting his blessings. It did shake him up though!

forgot to mention though that hubby turned into part time superman and tried to jump ditch to get to son, ended up not quite making it and landed rather ungainly at bottom covered in twigs and a rip to his jeans and emerged sporting a gash on the knee which cheered my son and I up greatly. Son - hurt nothing - Hubby - hurt pride!!!!
