Media player problem

Help, I have lost sound when playing dvd's with Windows media player  also there is no sound from headphones. If I use nero showtime or power dvd to watch movies I have sound ok including earphone sound, any video files on my computer play ok, also any films or tv programs recorded and burnt on to disc play ok with media player, music cd's play ok, it only seems to be dvd original films that have stopped playing  sound with media player, the picture quality etc, are ok I am baffled and almost suicidal ( well maybe that's a bit strong) I run windows XP home edition and any help would be appreciated.

i never found media player that great for DVDs and recommend u just use other better programs like nero show time.
It depends whether you have the right audio codecs installed on Media Player. It supports AC3 and Dolby Digital "out-of-the-box" so to speak but if you have a DVD with DTS encoding then you will either hear nothing or white noise.
