A friend of mine who was following me home one night told me that as I applied the brakes on my 206 the rear side lights went out and then once the brakes were released again they came back on, is this a normal feature of the peugeot 206 or is there something wrong?

Definitely something wrong. You have a short-circuit somewhere in the rear lighting wiring.

Not familiar with the 206 but most cars have a double filament build for rear lights/brake lights. One filament is on when the lights are on, the other filament comes on for the brake lights.

Sounds like a bad earth contact to me.
Hadn't thought of that landie ! Good point.
