I have a date of birth and someone who left the UK in 1956 to go to Canada, and that is the last that anyone heard....how do I go about trying to find out more this is for a elderly family member that wants to find out what happened to her brother.If the person has died would he be on the death records....and how do I get on those sites.

I will be taking you up on that offer badgerchops...just have to get the town in Ireland he was born and mom in law is the only one I can ask

Badgerchops...His name is John Hanlon so the family called him but apparently he also had the name Sean and somethimes went with that name. Born either 22 or 23 Feb 1932 left Ireland and went to Canada/ Vancouver left the job in Canada on 1/09/56 and never heard of him again. he worked at Williams Brothers in Canada as a jackhammer operator.

Exploring these two options at the moment. I have also asked someone from the canadian geanology dept to look at census records after 1956.

that sound amazing so many thanks....I am seeing my mother in law tomorrow so I will see what else she can remember. Do they have their parents names I might be able to get that. Also I am not sure if I mentioned this but he worked at Williams Brothers in Cananda Galgary / Alberta and stayied in the Mid town Hotel in Vancouver at a stage....not sure if that can help...ah thks....

Another tip for you which will require another letter:-

If John Hanlon is receiving a pension or contributing pension benefits, the National Search Unit at Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) will attempt to locate him in their records. If their records indicate that the person is deceased, there may be a beneficiary listed. In either case, staff at HRDC will attempt to contact the individual or the beneficiary on your behalf.

Badgerchops...thanks you have been amazing. I am going to start on these letters and phone calls and will let you know how I am getting on. Will contact you as soon as I have had a reply.
