im stuck because i would really like to work in an office doing receptionist or clerical paper work stuff or i would like to be a councellor and help kids in the social services but i dont know if you need to have gone uni for that and whether they would take a college leaver like me in because nearly all employers want the employee to have gone to uni with some sort of a degree

Hi Sarah,

just a couple of ideas.  Why not contact the local YMCA and ask about being an assistant youth worker, they do nvq training which would give you a start, or contact social services or the local youth offending team, they have volunteer mentoring programes which work with youths at risk, they supply certificated training.  Or contact your college and ask about night classes in counselling, most colleges do, again they are certificated and recognised qualifications and they are free.  I`ve done all of the above and I`m now 2/3 the way through my degree, it`s hard work but worth it.

I hope this helps, good luck

I would also suggesst that you seek further guidance. Try your local Connexions Office to research different job and speak to an Adviser, especialy as you have chosen different areas of work Adminstraion vs Social work / counselling.

Working as a Social Worker you will need to undertake futher education. For working in an office why dont you see if you can get an apprenticeship. This is where you work and gain a qualification - check out www.apprenticeships.org.uk for further information.
