was similar to a hot dog but i think the bread was crusty-made by impailing the roll on a hot spike then putting the frankfurter in the hole

Ah!
You can still buy those near me. Big heated spike which you put the roll over, then put in the sausage and wonder how to et the ketchup in. Taste a lot better than they sound....!

Used to sell them in Utopia nightclub in Reading, and now sell them at the bowling place/ Kassam sports bar in Oxford.  Mmmm with ketchup and mustard......
