Why did Ruth Kelly not wait a few days until after Gordon's speech to resign. So now instead of talking about his keynotes the meeja are all obsessed with the leadership. Is she bitter about something? and tis is just a preparatory shot for a major public outpouring? I'm no friend of labour but really even his own side are putting the boot in.

As I understand it, her intention was that by going at such an important time, her resignation would be relegated by the media to a small paragraph on page 7 because of the importance of Brown's speech.

She was wrong.

Brown's reshuffling the cabinet on Friday which makes it the logical time to step down. The timing's his, not hers.

As I understand it, her intention was that by going at such an important time, her resignation would be relegated by the media to a small paragraph on page 7 because of the importance of Brown's speech.

A cabinet member resigns whilst Labour are under going a pretty bad crisis, and she thought it would be on page 7?

And she is / was a cabinet member? Blimey!
She has said that she always intended to step down at the next reshuffle, but it seems the news was leaked to the media, and her speech today had to be re-written last night.

The general concensus is that the oft-used reason 'spending more time with her family' is actually genuine this time - she has four children under eleven. that was cited as one reason why she was made Education Secretaryt, which to me is as logical as saying i can practice as an optician because I wear glasses!

Never took to the woman personally - and her Opus Dei connection makes her weird to my way of thinking.
Found on http://www.phrases.org.uk

Spend more time with my family
Meaning: Euphemistic way of describing being made redundant.

Origin: Often used by UK polititians when explaining why they are leaving office at short notice.

I dont believe for a minute that shes resigned. Shes been openly critical of Brown. Far more likely that shes been given the boot and the spending more time with my family is simply a face saving statement.
no sh1t !!! - We'd never had known that
And you googled that all by yourself ?

BertiWooster I thought it might be a good idea to offer an alternative view to the ones expressed on this particular question. Everyone so far has said that she has voluntarily resigned. I think otherwise. And yes, I did google it all by myself. Im a big boy. ;-)
Hi birdie1971

I note that you haven't taken offence to my post - none was intended .

What I meant to convey , was that , it is well known that the phrase is a euphemisim used 99 % of the occasions , when a politician is sacked or jumps before being sacked .
