A good friend has asked me to look after his car for 12 months whilst he is working overseas It will be kept on my drive and given a run out every few weeks. Will he be able to add me to his policy as a named driver even though he is out of the country and it isn't being kept at his adress. Its a 2 year old BMW 5 series so you can see my concerns

He should inform his insurance company of where the vehicle will be kept - this could affect his premium either way.

Why does he want you to drive it every few weeks? It would be cheaper for him to declare the car off road, and just have fire and theft insurance.

The complication arises because a named driver must not be the main driver. If he is out of the country you will be the main driver.

I suggest he talks to his current insurance company.

Yes Ethel pretty much to my way of thinking the only reason he wants me to drive it and I agree is it wouldn't do the car much good not being used and moved for a year. I will get him to go through all the details with his insurance co before I agree to look after it
