why on every sunday does this site get mobbed by what seems to be a rabid frenzied wave crossword puzzlers? Is there some kind of weekly competion or something?

There certainly is/are. Each of the major newspapers has at least one if not more prize crossword competitions both on Saturdays and Sundays. Welcome to our world. Cruciverbalists reign supreme!

All the Sunday newspapers have prize crosswords in them
The Mail on Sunday prize is �1,5000. So people are desperate to get the right answers, and as this is a question and answer site...(.!!)...many come here for their answers.
