Cable line???????????

i have just moved into a rental property and wished to set up broadband/phone etc. rang BT and they said the line at the property was not via them but is a cable line!! I have phoned the Virgin and Talk Talk and they said they are not the providers.
How can i find out who the cable provider is?????

BT DO still have the monopoly on the final mile to your house - that's what LLU is all about.
BT still need to connect (or reconnect) this final wire, which clearly existed at some point in the past.
The PO (which is completely unrelated to BT these days) are just the same as TalkTalk or any other phone provider.
The point at issue is what BT will want to charge for reconnecting the line into the local exchange - and whether it will be waived if you promise to use them as your phone service provider to boot, for a minimum period of time.
If the PO are making this offer, they must be doing it by giving you �10 back off the BT reconnection price - its the only way - because BT alone control this final mile.

This must be the case, Talk Talk informed me i needed a BT line to recieve their services.
Currently looking at the post offices deal to see if they reclaim the cost of a cheap connection throught he call option or broadband!
I just want to send emails, what a pain in the ass!!!
Yes, it must just be a liaison service.

The worrying part is BT will only connect if you take a minimum 12 month contract with them - and I think that also applies to broadband, so I don't see how you can broadband from Post Office without paying a penalty to BT.
I sense a certain hostility to BT ?

what everyone always overlooks is that while all the other companies are given their equipment ... bt is totally hog-tied by oftel.

bt has very little say in who does what - and even less in what it will do itself.
in the exchanges there are demarcation lines and one part of bt (openreach) looks after the external plant.
another owns the exchange equipment - the bit in between is maintained by another control ... under contract to openreach ... if the line also has broadband ... another two operators are involved (generally the same engineer controlled by different parts of the organisation).

is it any wonder that the operation is "lumpy"? BT's overheads are artificially manipulated by oftel to "level the playing field" (god I hate having to salute the flag with that inane term on it - it's just not blue sky thinking ?))

on the other hand talk talk simply charge you for the line ... pay BT a small percentage .... and ... well do very little else except post out a modem

it's like all the other utilities ... it's the same pipes and wires no one ever asks what twisted system allows 3 different providers to charge 9 different tariffs - or why the company who owned the kit has to charge more.
