How is it possible to be using broadband via a BT line but there is no dialling tone on my handset? Had no problem in the past.

Quite possibly a fault in the exvhange on the 'telephony' side of the wiring, or in the equipment which handles phone calls (the broadband side being separate).

More likely, there's a dodgy joint, or even a complete disconnection, on one half of the copper pair between your house and the exchange. This will prevent DC current flowing to give you dialling tone, but the AC RF broadband signal can 'jump the gap'.

If the former is the case, you should see normal speeds, but if the latter, performance will be below par.

In either case, report it as a normal line fault to your telephony provider - and don't mention broadband!
or your adsl filter has failed.. ISP supplied ones are cheap nasty rubbish. try another one.

No I have tried disconnecting the broadband cable but still no dialling tone. If I phone my BT number from a mobile it appears to ring although the phone stays silent. I reported the problem to BT yesterday but still no action.

And yes the speed has dropped considerably and hardly registers on a speed tester.
sounds like a line fault, had the same problem broadband but no phone, confused the wotstit out of me until i found out the mechanics of it. Turned out a bad connection to the house on the BT side of things..

The BT engineer phoned me today saying the problem had been fixed. It was a bad connection in a junction box about 1/2 mile from my house. I was the only one in the area to be affected. At least BT seems to listen and act on your complaints, more than can be said for Tiscali where E-mails and telephone conversations have been going back and forth for over 2 months without a conclusion. It seems they are just after your dosh.
