The Wayward Wind was a #1 hit for Frank Ifield in 1963

Thank you, SeaJayPea.
If this is the Barefoot Boy song you're looking for, it's by Harry Chapin.

Oh, barefoot boy,
once he came unto a land of forests,
and of streams
that tumbled through the meadows to the sea.
He called it home for many were its wonders
and he learned to live upon the land
taking only what he needed.
Barefoot boy
he don't like the concrete
seek the country any way he can.
Barefoot boy
fading down the street.
I know he'll never come this way again.
Time passes on,
in this life of always changing
people coming
building cities
cut your forest
pave your highway.
Oh barefoot boy,
wraps his blanket 'round his shoulders,
says goodbye to misty valleys,
once more he sets off to wander.

The first one to have a hit with this was Gogi Grant in the USA in 1956, some 7 years before Frank Ifield. Also recorded by Tex Ritter and Britain's Jimmy Young, also in '56.
The Wayward Wind, that is!

SeaJayPea. I like the lyrics of this song but it is not what i am looking for. The lyrics to the one i want start

Barefoot boy
Sittin' by the roadside
Barefoot boy
Will you say hello
With eyes that shine
And lips that bring forth laughter
Barefoot boy
I love you love you so.

I think it was around in the early 70's, maybe 60's
