Are they worth it. I currently pay an extortionate 43 a month - on average the house runs two showers a day and a bath a day, as well as a couple of washes a day and dishwasher run everu other day.

Do you reckon I'd save any money on a meter???

Water meters measure in cubic meters (1000litres or 220 gallons ) and each unit costs less than 3, had one fitted for my mum she went from 48/month to 12/month. If you only use what you say I d expect you to half your monthly bill.
Your water Authority should be able to give you an estimate of the cost of water if you change to a meter. We (two golden oldies) saved about 45% when we had the meter fitted. The saving will very much depend on the rate banding of your house which is used to calculate your bill without a meter and the number of people living there which will determine how much water you consume after the meter is fitted. I have to qualify the financial saving by pointing out we make every effort to use as little water as possible.
Use this online tool to work out if it would be cheaper for you to switch to meter

Remember, you have the right to revert back to unmetered within 12 months of the meter being fitted
Thanks for the link Ethel, it says I could halve my water bill.
In my area you have no choice.
Every time a property has a change of occupier, it is compulsory to have a water meter fitted. This applies to rentals aswell as purchases.

There is no option to go back to unmetered.
had a meter for years now, best thing we did, saved a fortune...the scare mongers say once you are on a meter the prices will go up, absolute rubbish!!..not seen any silly price increases in the last 15yrs...
Ethel, on that link there were other peoples details, email addy, phone number. just thought to let you know
I moved to a house with a meter and made a big saving on my water bill. I used to pay 40 per month, and now I am on a meter, the bill is 10 per month!

I have always been careful with water usage anyway - not leaving taps running and having a shower instead of a bath - that sort of thing. But the saving still surprised me. I have a water butt, and use this water for the garden, and also for flushing the loo - it doesn't save much cost-wise, as water is cheap per cubic metre, but I like to feel I am not wasting water!

It's definitely worth looking into.
I had a water meter fitted a year ago and I pay 35 per month, my brother who lives a mile away has a bigger house, a hot-tub, a double garage with running water etc and he only pays 12 per month
Blimey Elvis, that's one heck of a low bill for your brother ..... is it definitely right?
According to his missus they pay 12 a month, dunno if they`re on a meter or not, but 35 really p!sses me off, ok ..it`s just him and her ...There`s 2 of us and 2 kids so the washing machine and baths /showers get used more but more than double the bill?
Elvis, how does 35 compare to what you used to pay when you didn't have a meter?

I think that for me, not having many baths keeps my bill down (and I prefer showers most of the time anyway).

I used to pay about 32.00 a month 2 years ago, now with a meter its 13.00.
chappie, I`ll dig out my old water bills and let you know
Thanks Elvis.
