If you mean the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd worlds, then the 2nd world was the old Soviet empire/communist bloc.

World 3 was also used as  term in Popper's philosophy.

The term "third world" was coined by economist Alfred Sauvy in the '50s.  It wasn't meant to imply third as in 3rd place, or inferior, but as an alternative to the two existing 'Worlds' of capitalism (i.e. the so-called 'West') and communism (the 'East').

The first world is the developed world i.e. the industrial nations.

the second world is the nations which are under-developed but relatively self sufficient.

The third world is countries which are totally undeveloped where, unfortunately, people tend to starve.

Westminsetr & Stoo-pid are right.  1st world= capitalism, 2nd world= communism, 3rd world= 3rd way
