How can you effectively treat a mouth ucler and what causes them?  I'm in a considerable amount of pain and having to forgo pretty much anything that isn't completely bland and tasteless.  going to get some Bonjela (the teething stuff) later, but wondered if there was anything that might be in the house i could use (ie, salt water)

I"ve got a mouth ulcer right now, and they are sooo painful so I"m feeling for you Morrisonker.

Get a tiny amount of salt on the tip of your tongue or finger (which ever is easier to access the position of the ulcer) and rub it into it. It'll taste discusting (sp?), sting at first and feel like grit in your mouth but believe me it does work.

Rub it untill you can't see the ulcer (it should go the same-ish colour of the inside of your mouth) and then just repeat everytime it starts to sting angain. This should only need to be done 2-3 times until the ulcer goes away.

Hope this helps and get well soon!

mouth ulcers may be linked to weakness or debility..they often follow colds ..influenza or a shortage of vitamin c...honey is reccomended to treat this as it controls the pain and encourages the healing of the ulcers,,another remedy is 2 teaspoons of cider vinegar to a glass of water and gargle,,hope these are of use..

Mouth ulcers can be caused by illness, poor diet, stress, anything that debilitates the immune system really.  I had a reccurring one every few weeks a couple of years back, due to stress, very painful.  Anyway, my dentist told me that gel like substances (such as bonjela) are not really effective, as the gel just slides off the ulcer straight away. He reccommended a spray called 'Corsodyl' which was about 7.00ish - brilliant stuff.  I used it for about a week, no more ulcers.  it may be pricey, but it's well worth it.  Also try eating more fruit and veg to get your vit. C intake.  Hope this helps xx:)

Buy Adcotyl ( In Orabase). Ask for just that, its not a gel but a paste and absolutely brilliant for getting rid of ulcers and any other mouth ailments.A small tube but it goes a long way.

There is this brilliant paste stuff for mouth ulcers you can get over the counter at the chemists.  Can't remember what it is called but it is a small tube and the paste is really dry and thick and stays on the mouth ulcer (rather than bonjella which is wet and slips right off).  It used to be available only on prescription.  It sorts them out well quickly and instant pain relief too.

Adcotyl ( In Orabase) - that is it!! it is brilliant
I always use a product called Frador. It comes in a little bottle & you paint it on the ulcer directly. It forms a sort of coating over the ulcer so it doesn't hurt anymore & it helps to heal it.

Change your toothpaste!!  My husband got them all the time for years.  then we found out about the ingredient sls http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/Organics_Features_SLS.htm

so changed toothpaste to one made by the above company!  guess what, he's had none since!

and i forgot myrhh, camomile tea and echinacea are pretty good at treating ulcers too.
taking multivitamins daily will prevent them in the first place
Before buying/taking multi vitamins, it's always best to check with a pharmacist first. He/she will advise you as to what you do/don't need. Good luck.

As other readers have advised, ADCORTYL IN ORABASE works wonders. Also, start taking Vitamin B tablets ( from Health shops and chemists), persevere with them for 6 months and hey presto ! no more ulcers.

I suffered for two years until I started this - I haven't had one for 5 years or more. Good luck !!
