How does it know where I'm from? In 'All channels' there is a default first channel as BBC1. Obv BBC1 is actually about 30 channels (BBC1 Midlands etc). How do I tell it where I'm from? Or where I'm at?

The box doesn't know exactly, but your viewing card supplied by Sky does. The card holds data such as your postcode and this information is used to choose your particular regional broadcast. Prior to 2002 the only BBC 1 channel broadcast on Sky was London, so at 6:30 you would have got LDN news rather than your local news. You can watch any regional news or opt out you like if you trawl through the channels from 970 onwards.
Your viewing card tells it your location so it should default to that. the other bbc regions should be up in the really high number... high 900's I think... ITV regions you have to manually program in to get them
