Blue Beetle game on Simpsons

For years now, I've been playing Blue Beetle with friends & family.  Basically, if you see a Beetle car you have to punch whoever is closest & shout the colour of the beetle (e.g. "Blue Beetle!").  The game was introduced to me by an old mate that I've lost touch with.

I always thought my mate made it up but now I'm not so sure cos the other day Bart & Lisa Simpson played the same game on the school bus (we actually had the same scenario once when we stopped at some traffic lights once outside a Beetle dealer!).

Does anyone else play this game?  If so do you know where it started?

We play it with new Minis, and call it Punch Buggy then whatever colour the car is. My children started this after watching the Simpsons episode you mentioned (I think it's called something like Bart vs Lisa vs The 3rd Grade), but as a child in the 70s we played something similar with VW Beetles. I think the game has been around for many years with different variations, but I don't know where it originated.
We used to do it as kids with Mercedes, and then there were variations for other cars, basically it allowed you to wallop someone every time a car passed!
we did this in the 70's with variations for different cars. Can't remember many of them, Anglia-Stranglia was one, this allowed you to strangle your mate.
I've heard of (and played) the game as well as variations like hitting someone whenever one of you sees a yellow car.
As kids we used to do it for every new regisration that came out, and the number that followed was the amount of digs you could dish out.

We played it as kids with every new registration out, the number that immediately followed was the amount of digs you could give.

lookslikemilk - Lucky you - walloping someone meant something far the opposite to a punch when we were kids ! Lol

When we were kids, we played this game, only we called it "Slug Bug."  Whenever one of us spotted a Volkswagen Beetle, we punched the kid next to us in the car in the shoulder and yelled "Slug Bug!"  A red Beetle was worth five punches, and a white one ten.  All hell broke out if we passed a Volkswagen dealership!  :)
had not played this game, or even heard of it..but it sounds great - i shall have to introduce it! On longer journeys we do have a 'battle' between haulage lorries. I always pick Eddie Stobart and my bf picks Norbert. you have to spot as many as you can, but have to point it out to the other people playing or it doesn't count. And you also have to be driving past it. seeing one in the car park of a servie doesn't count! Me being quite excitable and a tad loud, results in lots of whooping and 'sound the horn' gestures each time i see one. Lord knows what other road users think. But maybe i'll have to bring in the 'punching' element to add a bit of spice!
we used yellow cars
