Windows Media Player... problems with mpegs

Hi. Recently my pc won't allow me to download mpg movies, or even view previously downloaded and saved mpgs, with a windows Error Report box appearing saying it's detected a fault, and then closes the player and folder.
I use Windows Media Player 10, but have tried downloading WMP11 or some of its parts recently... will this have caused a conflict? WMP10 plays all other file types with no problem.
Any ideas what the problem might be, and how I can resolve it? Thanks very much for any help!

A partial installation of WMP 11 is, as you suggest, almost certainly the cause of the problem. As far as WMP is concerned, I can't suggest anything other than another try at installing WMP 11.

However, most of the 'regulars', here in AB's technology section, wouldn't touch WMP with the proverbial bargepole. The most popular media player, for video files, is undoubtedly VLC. It's free, here:

An alternative, which many people rate at least as highly as VLC (if not more so), is GOM:
