I would like to use my laptop in my summerhouse and have heard that you can use wireless connection. I am at present on broadband connected to the telephone line. What do I need to do to get the internet outside?

A wireless router and a wifi enabled laptop. If your laptop is not wireless enabled, you can buy a wireless adapter cheaply
a wireless router (abot 40-50quid, netgear or liynksys are about the best) and if it's not already built in a wireless adapter for your laptop.

There are also range considerations, how far is the summerhouse from the nearest phone point where you could connect the wireless router?

Thank you Ethel. My laptop has 802 1 lb/g wireless LAN so I think this is ok. What re-router would be best
It's up to you - I like Linksys or Netgear.

Who is your ISP? They may provide you with one.

Hello Ethel
Virgin is my ISP.
Now we need to know if you have Virgin cable broadband, or Virgin down your old bt line. :)

However, I have been using Linksys WRT54G with my Virgin Cable broadband for 4 years without a problem - just make sure you buy the right sort - some are for cable and some are not.

Hello Ethel
Virgin down BT line is what my broadband is with modem.
I'm not suggesting you buy from here - but it gives you an idea of what is available:

I personally have found the NETGEAR DG834GUK to be a good wireless router, I believe Ethel uses Lynksys, I have setup a few of them and I would have no problem recommending them either.
Any ADSL router :)

If I were buying today I would buy one with a printer port - plug the printer in and it is easy to print wirelessly
