We got a kitten a few weeks ago and so now have a litter tay in our house. Our 3 year old dog is getting on really well with the kitten but he has got a really horrible habit of eating the pooh out of the litter tray. Does anyone have any ideas of how i could stop him as it can't be good for him. I have a hooded litter tray and i use clumping litter and clean out the clumps daily. i have thought that putting down something that tastes horrible in the tray might work (like the things that stop dogs chewing things up) but i don't want to put the cat off using the tray. I am taking them both to the vet next week for inoculations so will ask then but it's really getting to be a problem.

If your dog is a bitch, she is responding to her maternal protection instincts, aroused by the scent of 'immature' faeces, which in the wild, she would eat to prevent the scent being picked up by predators. once your kiten's digestive system matures, and it's poo develops an 'adult' scent, she will stop eating it. If your dog is a dog, it may be the same instinct, but I am no expert, so your vet will advise you further.
I have two springer spaniels who often used to do this while out walking. Horse manure rabbit droppings, cow stuff, you get the idea. It is because the animal that left the offending poo hasn't digested it totally and so a dog simply see's it as food.I stopped my dogs doing it simply by telling them no every time they tried, although they always try when they think I'm not looking.
My dog used to do that too. She'd wander in with cat litter stuck up her little gormless nose & the vilest poobreath! I did set up some 'poo traps' by covering cats poo in an odourless spray that tastes yuck, called Bitterbite (you can get it from a petshop) I'm not sure if that was what did the trick or wether she just decided that dog bickies were better...who knows! I like andy's answer..probably more sensible than mine. emmagreeny...I was told that sheeps poo was actually quite good for dogs digestion...Mmmmm yummy!
My mum worked in a riding school with alotta dogowners and they called horse S*** dogburgers
