17a Westward here means you need to look at it backwards to solve it.

18a In Coldstream means it is a Scottish word.

33a The oprettist is Lehar.

39a The kernel means the middle letter.


13d You have too many "?"s at the end. It's a word made up of one word and then that word is repeated.

19d is an anagram.

32d is an anagram of the forename of one of the people mentioned in the preamble.

35d is one of the two words making up one of the unclued thematic works.
