Painting a stained wood door

We have a wooden door that at some time has been stained and was also an exterior door, brought inside by means of an extension. We wish to paint it white but have been advised that it would be better for the wood to leave it stained. Is there any truth to this?

Thanks in advance.

I would have thought that the wood would be breathing a great sigh of relief having been brought indoors to enjoy its old age. Once it has properly dried out (maybe 6 months) I should think a decent sanding, priming etc would leave it ready for whatever you wanted to throw at it!!

Good luck!

sand it, prime it, undercoat it and paint it. no need to wait. it's personal choice as to whether you leave it stained or paint it, no idea where 'better for the wood' advice is coming from. treat it as you would any door that you wish to paint, the fact that it was once an external door and is stained is totally irrelevant.
