Viggo Mortensen joined the cast of the Lord of the Rings as a last-minute replacement in the role of Aragorn.

But who was it he replaced, and why?

Stuart Townsend was originally cast in the role but after a couple of days filming, it was thought that he was too young for the role. He left over 'creative differences'.
It must've been an interesting oscar night for Mr. Townsend, seeing LOTR scoop a load of awards, and his girlfriend (Charlize Theron) winning best actress.
Stuart Townsend was too young to play the part - and he knew it, making it difficult for him to find the character. And that's why he left the film.
