Book I read

I recently read a novel about a woman killer ( or wife of killer) who made friends with her next door neighbours young daughter. It is driving me crazy trying to remember what his book is. The only one I can think of is Aftermath by Peter Robinson but not sure. Any help appreciated.

Is it one of a triology by Susan Hill about a detective called Simon Serraillier, who has a female twin 'a doctor!
