Broken computer refund in vouchers.

My parent's PC kept freezing and sometimes not startup about 2 months ago. They have taken it into PC world 5 times, where they have been told that the problem has been cured 4 times before it being written off on the 5th visit due to some parts being discontinued.

This morning my father received some vouchers to be used in store to buy a pc 'of same value or better' but they have offered �390, and you can't really buy any PC for �390 in PC world.

The PC was about 2 years old as the warranty ran out but the service agreement was still in place. But PC world kept trying to fob us off for about a month hoping that the service agreement would run out in March.

Our arguement for PC world would be that we never asked them to write off the pc and so would still be using one, without having to spend over the top amounts for another pc, when other replacement parts would have been sufficient. The last PC cost over �1,000 and my father doesn't want to pay that much just for another 2 years.

Do they have any right to get anything else other than vouchers, preferably replacement parts for our old pc, as I can't see why my parents should be out of a pc and told to buy a new one when the old one just needed fixing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How long had your parents had the PC for before the problems surfaced?

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 your parents have the right to reject the goods and claim a refund or repair - the choice is yours. The PC is not of satisfactory quality.

My advice is take the refund. You will likely get a better PC for the same money now.

Have a look online at Dell. Dell isn't everyone's cup of team I'm sure, but we use them at work and both my privately owned laptop and desktop were purchased from them. I've had no problems with the laptop, and only a failed DVD drive on the desktop (which I replaced easily). You will get a very decent machine for less than �400 and a top drawer one for the �1000 your Dad is entitled to be refunded.

Don't expect an easy time from PC World. All Dixon's stores are notorious for not recognising their obligations under consumer law. So your dad may have to raise a small claims action. If he does, that's when they'll probably give in.

Consult your local Citizens Advice - the kings of consumer law.
