Hi, recently when I have been attempting to run disk defragmenter or scan disk on my pc I have been having problems, in that it will not complete the task. A message often appears on one of the programmes (scan disk) to say that 'another programme is writing to the drive'? Can anyone help?

I had this problem years ago, I was advised to close all programs on the taskbar and in the icons bar. Go to your Task Manager and close any background programs, as some of these programs instantly refresh themselves within real time and that is why your disk defragmenter is not getting past a certain stage. Its kind of stuck in a loop. Also close any files such a gator or any calender programs you have downloaded.......... Hope it helps........
Try running defrag in safe mode

i believe this was  more of a problem before xp so i guess you are running 98 or me ?

but basically every time you defrag, you should ctrl, alt, delete to open running progs window and close all unmecessary progs at that point.

First of all turn off your screensaver, then if there's no difference select Start,  then Restart, tapping F8 at the same time.  This will bring up Safe Mode. Run ScanDisc first and then Defrag. I was told years ago that this is the correct order:

1. Safe Mode  2. ScanDisk  3. Defrag

yes try it in safe mode. I had (have) this problem adn ws told it wsa because of my firewall (Zone Alarm)
