How long?

Hi Everyone,

I came off the pill about 9 months ago and started trying for a baby ablout 5 months ago. As soon as we started trying I started taking Folic Acid.
As nothing had happened I stopped taking it a couple of months ago as it seemed pointless.
Anyone know if I should carry on taking it for as long as it takes or is taking it for prolonged periods not a good idea?

Also, how long has it taken people to fall pregnant - i know there are so many variables and everyone is different, but just an idea!!
Thank You!

Hi LuBlu,

I came off the pill about 6 months before i fell pregnant but i wasn't actively trying to get pregnant, me and my husband just decided to stop trying NOT to get pregnant and let things happen naturally. For that reason, i wasn't as good as you have been and wasn't taking folic acid supplements beforehand. If you are still actively trying to conceive then you'd be best carrying on taking them because you never know when you might fall pregnant - could be next month! and i'm sure the advice is to take it 3 months before you conceive anyway. Don't feel that it's pointless, it's a good thing that you're doing.

Don't give up, and just enjoy the trying!!

i've been trying for about 10 months to get pregnant. i take folic acid every day, i put it in my make up drawer and take one every morning. my doctor and i have an idea as to why i havent fallen pregnant yet, but if you have no problems, then just keep going at it and dont think about it too much. xx
Hi Lublu

I would keep taking it if I was you, if it was bad for over a long period of time, they wouldnt add it to cereals and other foods. I was still on the pill first time I was pregnant, the second time I wasnt on it but fell as soon as we decided to stop using any contraceptives and see what happens. Like you say, everyone is different.

Good luck :)
Hi LuBlu, like Lorrymac, my hubby and I decided to stop using protection rather than start trying for a baby, if that makes sense and I didn't use folic acid until I found out at 5-6 weeks.

I don't think folic acid actively improves your chances of conception but helps prevent neural defects occuring, I wouldn't think that long term use could harm you.

I fell pregnant first time although I had been off the pill for 18months prior to that. I am sure I read somewhere that it can take 6-12 for the pill to completely leave your system, depending on how long you were on it for. I was on it for about 8years.

hi when i came off the pill, it took me two years to get pregnant.......painful two years, paincking etc. but the worse thing you can do is get stressed cuz that just delays it more.after bein on the pill or any other method of contraceptive it take time, all depends on your body and how long it takes to return to its 'natural' cycle. so don' panic.
