Why does cold butter stick to the knife when buttering hot toast?

(Posted in food & drink too. For some reason the Science category didn't appear when I logged on a moment ago.)

I am asking other more knowledgable people in this section if indeed I am answering this correctly.......!

Is it because the electrons around the Atoms are moving more slowly and tend to grip or mingle with the other electrons forming the steel of the knife which are of similar temperature ?
Because you're not pressing hard enough.
