i have just bought a car and bought insurance on line hence no paperwork can i tax the car

No, you'll need to wait for your certificate of insurance to come through. :(
If the policy exists on the providers system and can be checked electronically, you are then able to apply for a tax disc online...

If you go through a private broker, you will usually get cover but with an urge to get the details asap. Well that's what my broker does.
