.....Here comes the yukky part.........i flushed the loo tonight and couldn't help but notice my 6 year olds poo had worms.  honest this is not a wind up.  He has a very good diet, fruit and veg aplenty, not too many sweets etc.  Please, what are the causes and how can I eliminate this?  Do I need to do anything? (Apart from next time just close the lid and flush!)

Tablets from the chemist. You'll all have to have it but it goes very quickly.See your doc Can you help with my scabies problem 2 questions down
As for the cause - they just get them I'm afraid. It's the sheer and utter joy of children.
Very common,  it's catching I believe.  It's no disgrace it can happen to anybody!
It is very common for children to get worms. They can pick eggs up from something they have handled outside - the eggs get under the nails. Sounds horrible doesn't it. You can get a powder that you mix in water from the doc called Pripsen it has a strawberry flavour.
do you have any pets or has your child come into contact with say a dog or cat? They can transfere worms parasites in thier saliva/faeces(sp?).
Biting fingernails is a common cause

Hopefully they are no worse than threadworms, also called pinworms. See netdoctor uk pinworms via Google etc.. The little eggs apparently are the stickiest things ever, fingers scratch bum, then get near nose and mouth then the whole cycle starts again. One reason I still avoid touching dirty handrails, doorknobs etc. in public areas. The medicine paralyses the little devils and they come out without getting round to the egg laying bit. Amazed you haven't succumbed. I did, several times, and my mum was scrupulous about all the measures. All happened again when my kids went to school. Good idea to keep some of the medicine handy so you can deal with future outbreaks immediately.

Also a good idea to wash bed linen and pyjamas just after treatment, to ensure any eggs that may be lying there are cleaned away.

The worms lay their eggs at night, just outside the anus, This causes the itchy sensation, so the sufferers scratches in their sleep, then in the morning, yawns/rubs eys/blows nose/eats breakfast, all of which run a high risk of re-starting the cycle as the eggs get into the digestive tract..

Wash any hand towels at the same time.

Your chemist stocks ovex tablets which the whole family can take (they're chewy and fruit flavour). Re-treatment is often advised after a period of one week.

If this seems to occur frequently, someone at the school may be re-infecting people by having particularly poor hygiene techniques. Cotton glove worn at night then thrown away in the morning can also help break the cycle, but the best way to break it is regular inspection and vigilence.
I think also when washing linen etc., it needs to be a hot wash.
