Yesterday I received my Linux software. My questions for you are:
- Can I load the software on an external hard drive and use it from there whenever I need to use it.
- If I can, how do I go about setting everything up.

I'm certainly not an expert when it comes to Linux. I know people who use it (and love it) and, as I've recently mentioned in another post, I intend to try it myself (but I've not done so yet)
There are basically three ways to use Linux. Firstly, you can have a computer which solely runs Linux. Secondly, you can set up your PC with separate partitions on the hard drive, so that 'dual-booting' is possible. (i.e. at startup, you can choose whether to load Windows or Linux). Lastly, you can run some versions of Linux directly from a CD (or an external hard drive).
I'll try to dig out the magazine which explains it all so that I can post a better reply later. However, I'd welcome a contribution from someone who's actually using Linux already.

you say just received .... you don't say which one .... do you have adsl?
'cause in my humble opinion - and understand I'm by no means a linux expert - .... I use it as part of my windows recovery arsenal.
I think it's fair to say that one of the most popular tryout distros is knoppix (I'm also sure that the hardcore users will be rolling round grasping their sides laughing - but this is how I started...)
go to http://www.knoppix.org/
get the CD or DVD version (which comes with a sock load of progs already loaded ....
the joy here is that to start with you can run it all directly from the cd or DVD
then .....if you like it ... you can load it on your system
using the incredibly detailed instructions which cover almost every eventuality.
