I see that the leader of the English catholic church has launched a 3 million appeal for domes on top of Westminster cathedral, not that they are at all visible from the ground outside, only to the few who attend.
Do you think it would be more beneficial if he approached his bosses in Rome, ???
After all, they have been selling mythical pardons for centuries.

If you look up they are actually visible from the outside.
I'll sell you an indulgence for five quid.

I'm not Catholic, but this is a great piece of architecture and deserves to be kept perfect for that reason alone.

As for looking to Rome, nope - each church is left to look after itself, and stands of falls on that basis. Might not be right, but that's the way it is!
I agree with Whicker (Hiya poppet!) regarding the building itself and keeping as close to the design as possible because it's a piece of heritage to my way of thinking plus there is something kind of cool about being in London and seeing it... sort of like the Square or Marble Arch, a bit of London history and a land mark that'll be around long after I'm gone . (Does that make sense?)

However I have heard too that churches are supposed to run themselves independantly from ROme but I too thought that since it's also a piece of history then perhaps they might make make an exception. I mean, it's not like they're short of cash are they?

Anyway, I suspect it might be that there could be two collections in catholic churches throughout the land now.
Somehow I doubt the multiple collection thingy China - given the location of the building I expect a few large donations from rich sinners such as ex-president Bliar will do the trick.
Good point!

pjriffe Me, look up to a place of shallow worship, never.
Whickerman do you do 2 for 1. I am not concerned with the sleazy rules of rome.
china doll the only history the building has, is of a oppressive regime which scared the wits out of people for money, or sold pardons, to put a gloss on it. there are plenty of buildings in London which share its history & you are welcome to them
Lil o Lady I doubt if mr blair wiil be seen at church, now he is no longer at No 10, however if he were to make a large donation I can think of a much more deserving cause which may ease his troubled mind, when he meets his maker ???
I fully expect you will see president bliar made a knight of st columba quite soon, for services to catholicism, and he will become a leading catenian.
The catholic mafia (murphia) is powerful and pervasive and they will ge their gilded domes but probably not via the diocesan accountants of english parishes.

Lil o Lady I would not put money on your first paragraph, but your second has more substance.
