I think I put slip coach, but didn't understand the 2nd part of the clue.
What letters?
Aquagility - I had S - I - C - A - H

...Some think it helps our Latin - noStrum
...I know the 'I' is right - TSEliot quote
... In game, defeat by English, about a hundred runs - laCrosse
...In one of the islands, Joseph wrote, one's not admitted - outcAst
...Without pretension, have to intervene in famine - down to eartH

Am reasonably confident about them all !

I have the same answers as you kettledrum, I just couldn't get the slip coach bit - also thought about spin coach as you get more chances with a 'spin' - is it some cricketing term?? Thanks for your help.

Just found out what a slip coach is so you must be right kettledrum - I suppose if he is coaching your slips - or mistakes, you may be able to take more chances?? Bit tenuous!

Thanks a lot.
The first part of the clue is, I think, to do with trains. A slip coach is one that is freed from the rest of the train - being pulled by an engine - and is left to free-wheel until coming
to a stop in the chosen station.

Don't understand the 2nd part at all !
Slip coach - one who coaches slip fielders .
