What will they allow - you do go fully comp, or have the driving other cars extention?

In regards to fully comp - most (who will quote for younger drivers anyway) will allow you to quote for a comprehensive policy.

In regards to DOC (driving other cars), this varies insurer to insurer.

DOC is only to be used in an emergancy - police are clamping down on the idiots who take out a policy on a crappy car and flout the conditions of DOC by driving expensive and powerful cars.

Furthermore, if you insure a L reg Escort, but then drive a 55 plate Impreza under DOC and have an accident, there is a very good likliehood that you will end up liable for all costs associated with the claim, and possibly face police prosecution and points.

If you find the overwhelming need to drive another vehicle that is not owned by you, either become a named driver on the policy that covers that vehicle, put it on temporary cover with your insurers (and pay the premium), or take out another policy.
hi

im 20 and also have a few years no claims bonus. getting fully comp insurance was not a problem. i found that by adding my mum onto the policy saved me quite a bit of money. and im also covered 3rd party to drive other cars. i'd recommed giving Diamond a ring (if your a girl, as they only insure women)! they were extremley helpful and explained everything to me fully. alot of my friends are also with diamond as they found they offered the best quotes.

also try looking on compared.com they can give you a rough idea on quotes but when you call them you can usually ge the price knocked down!

good luck x

thanx for you answers

gouldc i drive a t reg focus and the other cars that i would have access would be the same or less performance, why i was asking was because i had ran over some nails last year and front two tyres had punctures, so i had to get my dad to drop me off at work. it would have been easer if i could have taken his car.

ladypink i am a bloke so diamond wont insure me, but i might be willing to wear a pink dress (butch Maguire) lol.
Just to add to the above. Fully comp does not mean you can drive other cars, conversely lack of fully comp does not exclude you from driving other cars. The 2 things are not connected. You have to read the insurance certificate and accompanying conditions. If you can drive other cars it will have words to the effect:

"May drive other cars not belonging to or on hire to.....etc" actually on the insurancecertificate, if it does not and it is not covered say by a referal to an appropriate paragraph in the policy document, then you can't. It must say so on the certificate directly or by referal, end of.
When you drive other cars on your fully comp insurance, you only have legal minimum third party cover on that car (if your policy gives it at all)

Therefore if you drove your Dad's car, and crashed it then the repair or replacement of his car would be your financial responsiblilty. Ouch.
unless you pay for it as an addition on your policy which would probably cost a few quid and furthermore i would imagine that most insurance companys wouldnt allow this for under 25s.
diamond dont only insure women, they insure men too
Speak to an insurance broker. They would be more than happy to arrange insurance to meet your needs.
I am with Endsleigh, I have 3rd Party, Fire and Theft cover, 22 years old, no NCB, been driving 3 years and had one accident and I am covered to drive anyone else's car 3rd party, give them a shout.

thanks peeps will do its not due for a few weeks plenty of time to ring around
Be very very careful. When they say "third party" in almost all cases this is only the legal minimum. I think this is only for personal injury, and excludes damage to the car you are driving, and any other cars involved. In addition, many policies only provide cover if you are driving a car that already has insurance cover (although not for you to drive)
