I wonder if anyone is able to help me with the instructions in the Spectator crossword:

"In clues in italics, subsidiary indications omit references to parts of answers. These parts, occupying a total of 59 squares, must be shaded."

I'm afraid i don't understand this!
An example is the following italicised clue for 72a:
Below ear, for all to see, knot in a curl is loosened (12)
I think the answer is: "subauricular" - but given it is an italicised clue what should I do with it.

Many thanks in advance

Endanger - in your answer .... the letters that ARE referred to in subsidiary indications:
U - for all to see
S ICULAR - anag 'a curl is'

This leaves BAUR unaccounted for - but it could be either that one block of letters, or UBA & the R at the end , or ...

Take a photo copy - try it out - things usually become clear as you get more shaded patches.

Good luck
You enter subauricular as normal, but highlight the letter that is not clued for; in this case the first "a".
anagram of "is a curl" around "u" (for all to see..universal) and "bur" (knot).
It becomes clearer as you do more of the grid.
Oops! I've left out BUR (knot) - adjust my reply accordingly !! In the early stages it will prob be guesswork as to which A needs to be shaded.

thank you all - so to clarify - despite part of the answer not being represented in the clue, the answers that are filled out in the grid are the regular answers
