Hunched and inscrutable, President Robert Mugabe was forced to listen as Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, took him to task for "damaging Africa's image" around the world.

Brown should have done this, makes a bigger impact than his stupid boycott.
Why did Brown not go?
Was he scared?
Trying to appeal to Tory voters?
Not attending would embarrass Mugabe?

Brown's absence from this summit seems to me evidence that he did not have the balls to give the kind of speech Merkel made. As other EU leaders made it there, I think it was foolish for him to stay away. In doing so I think he looks little more than a petulant child rather than an up front adult and leader.
Girl Power, Angela.
No Power, Gordon.
Brown is damned if he goes, damned if he doesn't.
Merkel's lecture to Mugabe, won't make one iota of difference, as he has most of the African nations on his side.
He will either have to be toppled or assasinated, which looks unlikely.
If Zimbabwe had oil, the situation would have been sorted long ago. As for the other African leaders, name one apart from Nelson Mandela who genuinely cares about true democracy and human rights?

persianlady,

Nelson Mandela is not an African leader, he was pensioned off years ago. Thabo Mbeki, though not perfect, genuinely cares about the future of his country.
