every day on the M6 i drive past what i think are gas towers, they have been bugging me for months - they change height - i think! either that or i am going mad! what are they and why do they change height

If they are gas towers they do change height depending on how much gas is inside.  I think they cleverly use water at the bottom to stop the gas escaping (or something like that!).
Whereabouts on the M6?

They are gas holders and move up and down depending on usage.Are they near Junction 10?

They are gas towers, and apparently they're lined with a thick 'rubber sack' which holds the gas and lifts the tower as it expands?...

THEY ARE CALLED GASOMETERS
