This isn't about Abu Hamza, as such, although I'm using him as an example.

I hear today that a judge has ruled that Hamza can be extradited to the US but the final decision rests with the Home Secretary.

Fair enough.

So why, for instance, when an immigrant commits an appalling crime in Britain, does the Home Secretary's decision to deport him get stymied by a Judge?

it could be the cynic in me but could it possibly be that the judge has been enticed to help the home secretary look like he/she is a real tough cookie..........
because the law is more important than politicians. Would you want politicians to pu themselves above the law? (They do try.)
At a simplistic level its about checks and balances.
The HS can control the judiciary system if it looks as if its going to get out of control. Exactly the same the judicial system prevents the government getting carried away with power
The result has been that England and later Britain has been very stable - not to many revolutions
The monarchy, Parliament, and the courts of law all vie with each other for power but all end up being counterbalances to the other part of the (triumvirate not sure if that the right word?)
What gets me about this affair is the fact that the police just stood back and watched Abu Hamza preaching his hate on the streets over a long period of time. The Goverment also handed him huge benefits to support his wife and kids.

It was only when America asked for him to be extradited to the US, that our Police finally arrested him, he was then sent for trial and finally imprisoned.

Was this on America's orders?

Lets hope that nothing and no one will be able to stop him being extradited to the US. I dont think he will find a US prison as cushy as the prisons here. At least I hope not!
Us taxpayers will still be supporting the rest of his family though.
