Dial Up Problem

My friend is on a dial up connection through his phone line and tonight cant get on line.
He has a dial tone and it rings, but then it gets through it says teher is a problem connecting and he should hang up and try later.
Any ideas what he might try now? Please help?!!!!

Maybe his ISP are having problems at their end.

Thanks cheeky, it turned out that the filter attached at the phone socket had broken. All fine when replaced!
