I think companies are so ageist in this country, yo apply for positions knowing that you have all the necessary qualifications and find out later that a younger person was employed. Even the place where I work is ageist and do not seem to be ashamed of it.

But luckily places ARE getting better Sukkie, as experience can count for a lot. Suppose it depends on the line of work people are after.
I have just interviewed 12 applicants aged between 18 - 60 and have taken on two people who are 55 & 57 years of age.
Good for you Toby - and hopefully you'll get a good few years of decent work out of them.
I applaud B &Q for employing so many older people, they are a fount of knowledge about all things DIY. Unfortunately you can never get a trolley at B&Q cos all the staff are using them to get around with.

I applaud anyone who takes on older people, I am in admin and bookkeeping but although I got a job and have been there for a couple of years, I believe one is never too old to better oneself hence the jobseeking. I am going nowhere in my present employment due to ageism and really would like to better my position and salary before it is too late as I am only fifty now. I constantly study to improve myself and keep my mind working, which I would have thought would help my position.
I was going to post a question about this. I am 53, have worked all my life and can't think about retirement for another 12 or 13 years at least. I have been in my present job for quite a while now and would like to change. I certainly don't feel too old and I think that age and experience count for a lot. It's encouraging that employers are beginning to look past the age question.
