Thanks B, I saw those when posting, just wondered if anyone else has had a go since. I'm going to try it as soon as I manage to rig up a base, or give up and buy one! I plan to do it in my oven if it'll fit
Country - most of the people I know who make it just open the can of beer. Prop the chichen up on it's legs and the can and cook it on the grill outside - it stands up just fine with no additional help. Although the ovens we have in our kitchens are plenty big enough to stand them up in a pan in the oven. They use different rubs for the chicken before they start preparing it for cooking. I like the recipe I got from Emeril that is spicy.
Country - just in case you want to try it:

Emeril's Essence Creole Seasoning
Courtesy of Emeril Lagasse

2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme

Combine all ingredients thoroughly.

Yield: 2/3 cup

I usually keep some of this mixed up to use on chicken and other kinds of meats.
Hi country_boy, I have made this a few times. I wasn't too impressed by just balancing the chicken over the beer can. I found it difficult to get the can out of the chicken, and was concerned that it would tip over and scald me. The chicken was juicy though. I sent off for a stand on ebay (not very dear) so it's now much easier and safer to cook. Hope this helps.

It's getting cold here in the UK now so maybe next year I'll try it outside on the bbq. Thanks for the seasoning recipe - I'll def give it a whirl.
Cheers Jinglepot - also had the same thoughts/concerns - def gonna get a rack sorted - have seen them for less than 10 so won't break the bank!
Me again, country_boy, buy the rack for the chicken!! I live here too (UK) and use my oven to cook it . I'd love to be able to cook it in my BBQ, but it's just not tall enough unfortunately. It's worth giving it a go in your oven!!
