sisters baby stops everything to watch the adverts...?!

This is not a problem, just something I am curious about.
My sisters baby (nearly 8 months) stops everything to watch the adverts.
she knows when they are about to start and end and seems to prepare herself for them to start
she knows when something is a tv show and not an ad.
she will stop eating, get up from a cosy place, and just stare at the tv, you get no reaction from her and cannot distract her until the show starts again, and then she just turns back to you and carries on as normal.
she has even woken up to watch them and gone back to sleep afterwards!
she will reach and strive to be put in a viewing position and go mad if you are in the way - but again, doesn't like the actual shows.
its odd, she almost leaps up to see.
the are certain adverts she seems to like and dislike and laughs at some and looks sad at others.
she especially seems to like any bank or finance or loans type ones
any one else have this, and how in gods name does she know??
(we have put this to the test too - we wrote a scorecard, and it was every single time, unless she was properly asleep and not dozing)

a long time since I've watched closely, and I've no idea if it applies in a zillion-channel universe, but isn't there some little doodad flashing in the top right corner of the screen before an ad comes on, to let local operators know when to switch over? Just possibly it's caught baby's eye? Then the ads are usually a bit louder than the surrounding programmes, so maybe she loses interest when the volume fades again? Just a guess.

Jno, i thought that at first, but only itv have this marker, and its not always visible on certain tvs.
the thing is she doesn't watch the shows, she suddenly sits up or turns around or opens her eyes just before they come on, so she can't be attracted by it, also its just a little black and white stripey block so given all the flashing colours on screens, i can't see a baby being drawn to it, it also disappears throughout the ads.
could be somewhat volume thing i suppose, she sleeps with the tv on very low and sleeps through car chases, arguments, any tv noise really etc etc
perhaps she is bein subliminally programmed...lol
skype, she does it no matter what advert though - i realise she will get to recognise some, such as the finance type ones - but she does even before they have started and watches the whole ad break then turns away.
she sometimes jumps up when the end music starts, or when someone says a ''thats all from us'' sort of thing.
it is indeed very cute as she cannot be distracted and struggles to get into a good viewing position - sometimes it like she been electrocuted and snaps her eyes to the screen.

My son, now 7 did exactly the same thing as a baby - and as you say, the finance or debt type of adverts seemed to be a particular favourite - esp anything with carol Voderman. we used to joke that he had got himself into debt in a previous life, he is completely normal now and doesn't show any particular fascination for anything on tv. He is very bright though and reads at 3 years above his age level, so maybe skyep is right!
My niece did something similar, but with the introduction to Law and Order. When she would here that voiceover say "In The Criminal Justice system..." she would run to the TV and stare at it and dance to the music. She also would try to make the Da duh noise too.. We called Jerry Orbach her boyfriend.
How much time does the baby spend in front of the TV? Couldn't you all find some other way to stimulate her? Babies shouldn't be exposed to too much television - there's a whole world of other stuff out there. She needs to interact with other human beings more and not just be stuck within reach of a screen.
These days parents rely on TV to babysit their children to the long-term detriment of the child.

If she was plonked in front of the tv, how would she be able to only watch the ads, or snap round to look at the screen, or struggle to get a view of the screen??
for gods sake the whole post has been about the fact that she appears to only react when the ads are on, and how she know what they are!
if you had bothered to read the question and subsequent posts, you would have seen that I refer to the fact that she DOES NOT WATCH THE TV!!
she plays happily with the tv on in the background, and only looks up from what she is doing in order to see the adverts - then looks away again.
as I said, numerous times in fact, that SHE DOES NOT WATCH THE TV!!

in future, in order to prevent your knee jerking so fast, and to stop you getting dizzy from all that conclusion jumping, take your time and ACTUALLY READ WHAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN.

Joko My son found neighbours had the opposite effect, no matter how restless he was as soon as the theme tune played he would settle down,(usually fall asleep) We put it down to the fact that when pregnant i used to always use neighbours as a chance to sit down and relax with a cuppa while i watched it.
Maybe your pregnancy habits have made a difference, did you frequently jump up to make a cuppa as soon as the adverts came on or rush around to get bits of housework done before the ads finished?
