Hello All,

I recently brought an MR2. I've got the vehicle MOT'ed yesterday and ive got an insurance certificate. but as i dont have the V5 i cannot get the vehicle Taxed :( Ive phone the DVLA and they said i need to wait 4 weeks until i receive it. i cannot wait 4 weeks i need to use the vehicle. The guy i brought the vehicle off didnt have the small green slip used to tax a car. :(

If i get caught with no tax but with MOT and Insurance what happens? How stupid that i have to wait 4 weeks to tax my car

You'll be fined. What's more Uncle Bill will keep his eye on you, and you can be fined every time he spots you!
When you bought the car you should have been VSC/2 New Keeper Supplenment. I presume that is what you mean the small green slip.

Go back to the seller and demand it. If he can't give it to you then alarm bells should be ringing about if it was his car to sell
of course you can tax it,go to your nearest dvla office and they will tax it there, you just fill out a couple of forms, you cant do it at the post office
by the way,did you sign the log book form to say you were the new keeper.if he had that then he should have the other page, sounds dodgy to me
Not true I'm araid Steve, they tightened the requirements. You have to have a renewal reminder V11, registration certificate or new keepers supplement.

Nop he had lost the VSC/2 supplement bit. Its abit stupid really i would even call them pay over the phone but NO i have to wait 4 weeks. Ive done HPI checks etc etc before the vehicle was brought. dont worry about that,

They are quicker than four weeks. They are just quoting the worst case to stop you ringing all the time.

An aquaintance of mine at work (not friend!) never taxes his car, just drives with an out of date one and SORNs it.

Seems to get away with it.

On his previous car he didn't SORN it and got sent a fine. He didn't pay it and has heard no more. Makes you wonder why us law abiding ones bother.

Thanks Panic Button,

Its does make you wonder at times, Question if you do get pulled over and the old bill check your tax i know you get a fine. But will they stop you from driving the vehicle? Ive heard some people get 7 day wonders.

At the moment im keeping the receipt that i brought the car/MOT and Insurance Cert in the car just to prove im waiting for the V5 LOL. :)
My 'friend' has finally bought some tax. Only six months worth though. Bet he doesn't renew it then.
I would laugh if the DVLA did this to him!
The person you bought it off should have his registration certificate. You dont need the small green slip, just take the green a4 v5 along with other documents into post office and they will give you your tax disc and they will send green part off to dvla and then dvla will send you your v5.
If he didnt have this either (and he really should have his v5) if the police catch you and you explain situation you should (depending on which officer you get!) be ok as long as you explain situation and then back date your tax disc to the beginning of the month when you bought you car.
I only know all this as also recently bought mr2 and had same prob taxing it! Also relative is a policeman!
