Homing device for cats/dogs?

If pets can be microchipped with their id, why can't they be microchipped with a homing device as well? It would save a lot of heartache.

Implanting a device that could pick up or be picked up by satellite would not be feasible at the moment due to the size and power requirements. I believe you can buy collars with tracking devices built in

You can buy tracking collars for dogs, usually used for hunting, but they have limited range and are relatively expensive..about �500 plus. They are also quite bulky, so I suspect that even if you could get one for a cat, it would get damaged or knocked off.
