best way to take money to Thailand

is it best to just take travel cheques or are there plenty of atms in bankok and phuket?

also cash....best to take english, us dollars or local currency?

There are atms all over the place in Thailand, as common as in Britain I would say.
Consider opening a flex account with the Nationwide. They don't charge anything for overseas withdrawals. If you take a few pounds with you, there are exchange desks at the airport.

There's no point at all in taking $US - they will be two exchange rate hits rather than one if you do that.
